Harry Potter, Star Trek, Merlin, and Supernatural Recs + 1 Meta rec

Supernatural Meta

Supernatural Thoughts by faye_dartmouth I thought faye did an excellent job of detailing a bit of what's happening in SPN. If you're having a blast with season 4 and 5 I do not recommend this meta. For me it appealed because while I still watch the show I still miss season 1 and 2 of SPN and this post did a great job of articulating some of what I miss.

Harry Potter

Theft of Assets, Destruction of Property by [info - livejournal.com] helenish (Draco/Neville) INSTANT REC!!!! I could not stop reading once I started! I loved the plot, character voices, and I really loved the ending. :)

Merlin

The Knights Have a Thousand Eyes by stakeaclaim INSTANT REC!!! I loved the plot, character voices, and mostly I just loved seeing Merlin and author from the outsider pov and this had some funny moments!

Shadows of Truth by cat_77 (Gen) I had a blast reading this story. I loved the character voices, the action, plot, and how everyone pulled together. Good adventure story.

Different perceptions by gonrie (Gen) I loved seeing Arthur and Merlin's friendship from multiple povs.

Star Trek Reboot

Terminal Point by [info - personal] posyvanilla (Kirk/Spock) I liked the plot and character voices.

Repeat Offender by seperis (Kirk/Spock) I really liked the character voices and the plot.

Supernatural

A Surprise or Two by dreamlittleyo (Sam/Dean) This was very hot and her evilSam was perfectly ruthless.

Mistaken for Strangers by bellatemple (Gen) I really liked the original character and it had good character moments.

Question to my flist?

Is the term Redneck considered offensive? Because I use that term quite loosely describe a lot of guys in the south, especially in Texas and someone pointed out to me recently that it's considered offensive. So it was kind of a surprise to me because I'd always considered it a descriptor for anyone that likes fishing/hunting, beer, and big trucks. And may or may not be uneducated.

EDIT: the masses have spoken! :)

Based on the responses it's safe to conclude that yes using "Redneck" can be offensive so I should only use it with good friends and family, or if I really want to insult someone. Thanks everyone who responded!

Finally smart writing!

Yes, I'm talking about White Collar, again. I LOVED this episode. I keep thinking I wish they'd get the writers from Burn Notice to work on this. That show is always smart. short spoilers ) Much Love!!

In other news, I have de-modded myself from [info - community] whitecollarfic. I let [info - personal] peja know. Now I'm just a subscriber.

Why must I think of these things?

::fake sigh:: (fake, because I'm actually delighted my brain is churning out fic ideas lately, even if some of them come out like this)

What is with this? I'm working on two simultaneous WC fics, and I suddenly find a metaphor I like for Neal and Peter's relationship. Prospero and Ariel. Cute. Is there a way I can use it? Oh, probably not without getting obnoxiously heavy-handed and trite. Still, just a nice idea, I'll keep it in mind for ... something.I can't stop thinking about it )

Stop me before I write again!! Arrgh.

ETA: (My use of the "I signed up to write what?" icon is not any hint that I'm writing White Collar for Yuletide. It just had the right feel of horror to it at the ideas my brain was "signing me up" for.)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH

I just renamed the files on teland because a rather gratitude-inducing individual informed me that -- somehow -- it got indexed on google, which... no.

WORLD OF NO.

I -- look. It could be as simple as the fact that I've been using my gmail to point people to the story, but I would like to ask -- *beg* -- that those of you who have read the thing *not link it anywhere*. At all. Yes, that includes del.icio.us, nalasalad2. And maybe don't write out the links in your google apps?

Christ.

I'm going to put in that thingy to block robots just as soon as I can make my brain work enough to do that. In the meantime...

Hell. Just take the 'me' out of the file name. Save it onto your hard drives if you want it, because I'm *thisfuckingclose* to yoinking it.

Dear White Collar fic writers

Dear my fellow WC fans,

When you are writing the nickname of Peter's wife, would you mind spelling it Elle, like the character in Legally Blonde, not El like El Mariachi from Once Upon A Time in Mexico? For me? It does things to my brain.

Much Love,
XOXOXOXOX

Me

Oh, and also (I'm tacking another WC post onto this one because I'm starting to fear my new fandom obsession is making me spam my circle) I have to rec this commentfic at collarkink. What amazing writing, in a little package. Not that there aren't tons of hawt prompt responses there that I could rec, but this one (not porny, actually) is so beautiful, it shouldn't stay buried in with 100 other commentfics. If I had written that, I wouldn't stay anonymous, either. I hope she claims it, because I want to read other things written by her.

Portrait of a Woman

The prompt is that Elizabeth wants to show Neal he can put his talents to legally profitable uses, and she poses nude for him to paint while Peter watches.

Honestly, this is so lovely.

Edited: Yayy! I know who wrote it now. [info - livejournal.com] facetofcathy

White Collar vid

I came across this nice rat-packy vid:

http://le-mousquetaire.livejournal.com/179133.html

And now I seriously want to learn how to make a vid. Yes, I said this about a year ago, and some of you offered helpful suggestions and recced software for me. But it was an intellectual thing for me then, not fueled by fannish impulses.

I so want lots of WC moments put to cool music. ::ponders::

Write kink to raise funds for the OTW

Write us some White Collar kink! The mod of Collar Kink will donate a dollar for the AO3 project for every kink prompt that gets filled by this Friday.

C'mon, you barely have to have seen this show to write kink for it. *g* You can do it! They've got 65 unfilled prompts, and there's no limit on how many "fills" can be written for a single prompt, so even the filled prompts are fair game.

I am agog at the United States Postal Service! I ordered some Titan Books Transformers collections off Half.com Friday night--well after business hours--and two of them arrived TODAY. Monday. The equivalent of overnight delivery, since they couldn't possibly have gotten to the post office before Saturday morning.

Via Media Mail, which is supposed to come within 4-8 days, if you are lucky.

You are raising unreasonable expectations, Postal Service! The next time I completely fail to get a package, I will be even madder at you!

The collections themselves are LOVE, by the way. I first encountered them in person in New York two weeks ago, and bought two--Legacy of Unicron and City of Fear--because they are just that exciting. You see, the UK Transformers collections were originally published in magazine-style format, so regular comics-sized reprints (like the IDW ones) don't quite do them justice. Nor, frequently, do the scans.

The paper on the Titan reprints is also a bit less glossy. I don't like glossy paper, especially on trades, where the angle of the pages increases its tendency to reflect back at you.

And on Half.com, as opposed to in New York, they are pretty cheap.

Quotations are your friend

I just ran across a story that used apostrophes in the place of quotations. I'm still rather sure that in 99% of the cases quotations are required at the beginning of dialogue and at the end of the dialogue. It's not even something that's easy to fix because you can't just replace all the quotations with apostrophes without messing up the apostrophes in the story. grrrr

I'm normally not a grammar nazi but in this case I'll make an exception. It's ugly formatting and not proper writing!

EDIT: it appears that this type of formatting is common in the UK. I didn't know that, but I do still prefer regular quotes so you don't get sentences that look like this.

(random sentence that I modified)

'They do.' She slipped into the galley, moving soundless on little bare feet. 'I'm hungry.'

Packers over Cowboys and etc.

No, I wasn't here gloating about last week because last week's game was so bad as to be existentially demoralizing. The Packer nation was in shock and looking at each other going, "You mean they actually suck? We thought they -- you know -- didn't suck."

Burying the Cowboys today was downright unexpected and SO satisfying. *g* It wasn't so much to the offense's credit, I must say, but the defense, which showed lots of early potential, really brought it today.

In other news -- my uncle's wife was diagnosed Friday with breast cancer. We're going there for Thanksgiving. I don't know what her plans are. *sigh*

Today we sang the Hungarian National Anthem for the minister of our partner church and his wife. I heard a funny story about how our two churches partnered up. Apparently it was after the Iron Curtain fell. Before then we had been unable to communicate with any Unitarian congregation in Transylvania (which used to be in Hungary but is now in Romania), and which, believe it or not, is considered one of the birthplaces of my denomination. We wrote letters looking for a church to partner with, and this one in Nagyjata wrote back to say they'd love to, and they included a mystery gift. *g* It was a handcarved wooden ... thing. It looked kind of like a breadboard with a long handle. A year or so later some people from our church were able to go for a visit and they took a gift of an embroidered artwork of our church building and the parable FL Wright chose to paint above our sanctuary.

While there, our little delegation learned that the mystery gift was a laundry paddle. There is a tradition that shepherds would carve a laundry paddle and present it to the woman they wanted to marry. If she accepted the proposal, she would return him a gift of an embroidery.

We had unknowingly accepted their marriage proposal. *bg* I love that story. I was oddly self-conscious about singing their National Anthem, because we had struggled so much with the pronunciation, and I knew we were still off. A woman singing with me calmed me down by asking how I'd feel if I visited somewhere and they tried to sing my National Anthem in a language not their own. I relaxed. Of course I'd love it even if it was terrible. (and ours has a tough tune, I will say)

Had a really good day with [info - personal] karitawyr today. Which is an amazing thing considering my day started by discovering a leak in my toilet plumbing.

No more home warranty, so I had to do the scary thing of finding a plumber on a Saturday. He took a couple hours to get here and probably spent another hour actually working. I have no idea how long he was here though. Not really. All I know is that I am thankful I got paid yesterday and that this was the check with the 20 hours of overtime on it.

But like I said, good day otherwise. Watched SGU (I think I actually almost liked this episode). Made Karita watch Community. We watched the dvd release of Children of the Gods.

And food! Ate entirely too much. Found out there are two Irish pubs here in Leavenworth. One was kinda scary looking and the other was closed. :( Also there's a wee Brit shop here that we visited today, but the emphasis was definitely on the tea and not the other stuff.

And we knitted! Much knitting with the tv on.

A good day. A really good day.

I needed that.

It's come, it's come!

Yuletide squeee!

Wowowowowow. My recipient wants ... well, she's pretty specific about it, and it made me raise my eyebrows. Really? Reasonable, but unexpected. Totally doable, though.

Wheee!

ETA: She has a nonstandard OTP that, according to the numerous posts in her journal is absolutely eating her brain. And there is NO fanfic for it. I could give her such a gift if I could do this right!

Archive of Our Own?

Thanks to the excellent [info - personal] zing_och, who also got me the Dreamwidth code, I now have an Archive of Our Own account!

It is exciting. I wasn't active in fandom (lurking *a lot* but not really active) during the heyday of central archives, so I've always sort of quietly yearned for a place to put my stuff up, where all my little incidental things could get edited up properly without spamming my flist.

A stable server with resources is nice--I put a bunch of my stuff up on the Marvel Fanfiction Archive site, which doesn't exist anymore.

(I mean, obviously not stable *yet*. But eventually!)

In other news, I'm not very prolific, but after five years it does add up! *eyes stack of things to upload*

Oh fandom, you are my people

Can I tell you how it warms my heart to see everyone squeeing because there's water on the moon?

As well we should. It's just, not everyone understands that, or appreciates why we should.
